The Fire Recruit Program is a competitive selection process that is conducted annually. Candidates must submit an application that can be found online at colerain.org. Applications are accepted during an open period declared by the hiring announcement. Applicants will be contacted to attend an informational session that will cover the program in-depth. Individuals selected for enrollment into the recruit program must qualify and complete all steps of the process by deadlines set forth by the Program Director. Effective July 1, 2016, the Colerain Township Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) became only the second department in the State of Ohio to achieve this prestigious Class 1 rating, and the first in the Greater Cincinnati area. The rating is a positive reflection of the department’s efforts to provide dedicated and professional fire, EMS and “all hazard” emergency services to the residents and businesses of Colerain Township.
What this means for our citizens and businesses is that they will now have the benefit of the lowest fire insurance rates in the country, and we hope this will attract future residential, commercial and business development to Colerain. Less than 200 fire departments in the United States have received this rating placing the Colerain Township Department of Fire and EMS in the top 99.99% of departments nationally.
You can go to any Colerain Township fire station between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to have your blood pressure checked. Please remember the firefighter/paramedics may or may not be at the station when you go, as they may be out responding to an emergency.

The Colerain Township Citizen Fire Academy (CFA) is a community outreach program that focuses on the citizen and building long-lasting relationships with residents of the community. The academy is a ten-week program (11 with graduation night) conducted in the evening one night a week. The program is not intended to be for those who wish to become certified firefighters and emergency medical technicians, but rather to obtain an understanding and general education of the services provided by the department, and what the fire service is all about.
During the academy, citizens will attend indoor classes that are highly interactive, as well as outdoor classes that are entirely hands-on. Once the student graduates from the Citizens Fire Academy, he or she will have the opportunity to assist the fire department in making a positive impact within our community. Graduates of the CFA have assisted the department with smoke detector blitzes, fundraisers, public educational events, and much more. Sometimes, but typically we do not get cats out of trees. We suggest opening a can of tuna and placing it under the tree. The cat will find its way to that food.
Yes. Donations are utilized for Community Risk Reduction programs, such as our Fall Prevention Program. If you wish to donate, please make a check payable to "Colerain Township Dept. of Fire and EMS". If you would like your donation to go toward a specific cause, please indicate that with your donation. Please note that If nothing is specified, it will go into the Fire Department’s operating budget.
Colerain fire and EMS units are dispatched according to the information obtained by the 911 operator. Based on this information initially obtained, the incident is categorized into one of nearly 50 dispatch codes, each with a pre-assigned number of units dispatched to that type of response.
Colerain Township utilizes the most current and up-to-date information available. The most recent Ohio Fire Code, which is essentially an adoption of the International Fire Code, is what the township utilizes and enforces. This code is updated approximately every 3 to 4 years, and is part of the International Code Council’s family of codes, including the International Residential Code, the International Building Code, and the National Electric Code.

Emergency Medical Services patient care reports are subject to the restrictions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPPA) and can only be released to the patient or the legal guardian of a patient.
While the Colerain Township Department of Fire and EMS checks and services all fire hydrants annually to make sure that they are working, the Cincinnati Water Works handles the maintenance on all fire hydrants. A leaking or broken hydrant can be reported by calling us at 513-923-5035.
The Colerain Township Department of Fire and EMS requires a key box for every occupancy except a private residence. Private residences, especially those with special needs occupants, can also participate in the program. The Knox Box Rapid Entry system was developed specifically for the fire department. A bill is sent to your insurance company. Insurance companies typically pay between 80 to 90% of the bill. The remaining 10 to 20% of the bill is waved for residents of Colerain Township. This is possible due to tax levies. Residents of Colerain Township will not receive a bill for services. Only non-residents receive a bill for EMS services provided. We block the immediate area where the accident occurs, but we will also block an additional lane of traffic to provide a safe area for our crews to operate. Crew must be able to provide medical care to the patient without placing people in undue hazardous conditions. Each year many police, fire, and construction workers are injured or killed by drivers that lose control of their vehicles while passing accident scenes. We must protect our patients as well as ourselves.
Most of our personnel work 24 hours at a time. That means all meals must be prepared and consumed while on shift at the fire house. Our fire stations have four to thirteen people on shift at any given time. In order to accommodate meals, each person working contributes to the overall purchase of the day's meals. You may see one to four fire personnel shopping at the local grocery for these necessary things but the crew(s) remain "in service" and available for emergency calls.

The Fire District Fund is facing a deficit at the end of Calendar Year 2021. Due to a one-year lag in implementation of a new property tax, fall of 2020 is that last opportunity to raise revenues to plug the budget hole for 2022.
A watershed is an area where water from rain or snowmelt drains from a high point into a body of water such as a creek or lake. In Colerain Township there are two major watersheds: the Great Miami Watershed bordering on the west side of the township and the Mill Creek Watershed, which is represented by the West Fork Mill Creek located on the east side.
Watersheds have a number of unique features including creek channels, flood plains, and riparian zones/vegetation. These features are interrelated and are important in water collection, water storage, and in maintaining creek health by helping to reduce soil erosion and by acting as a buffer to reduce the amount of pollution going into the water. Therefore, it is important to maintain buffer strips and to not mow them or cut them down.
It is important to know that our watersheds are part of a larger system, meaning the water from both the Miami and Mill Creek Watersheds eventually reaches the Ohio River, which flows into the Mississippi River and finally into the Gulf of Mexico! This interconnectedness of water makes a watershed an even more fragile system because of the affect pollutants from different communities along the way can have on it.

The parks are opened 365 days a year. Heritage Park, along the Great Miami River, occasionally experiences closures when the river floods and the banks overflow into the park.
No. We do not provide snow removal along the walking trails.
The restroom facilities are open April 1 through November 1 of each year. Because our restroom facilities are not climate controlled, we hire a plumber to winterize the restrooms so that the pipes do not burst.
The Parks and Services Department does not prohibit fishing on Township property as long as citizens follow all Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife rules and regulations and possess a valid fishing license.
Yes, Colerain Township opened a dog park in 2018! One of the baseball fields at Heritage Park (11405 East Miami River Road) was converted into a dedicated dog park where dogs can run free without being on a leash.
Trees have been planted that will eventually provide shade to benches spread throughout the dog park. Agility equipment and water have been installed for the dogs to enjoy. We have a separate area for small and big dogs. The small dog park is located near the main dog park. In addition to our dog park, all Township parks are dog-friendly. All pets must remain on a leash (maximum six feet in length), kept under physical control at all times, and not be a nuisance or a danger to other park users.
Pet owners are required to remove their pet’s fecal deposits from the park grounds and place their waste in a suitable receptacle. No pets are permitted in play equipment areas or on baseball fields. Colerain and Clippard Parks have dog watering stations along the walking trails. Most parks have mutt-mitt stations to use to pick up pet waste.

Yes. Colerain Township maintains a policy of providing opportunities for all park visitors to enjoy its facilities and programs. Through concentrated efforts to upgrade existing sites and develop new areas, the Parks Division’s goal is to have the majority of facilities accessible to park users. The Parks Division will make a reasonable effort, with at least one-week advance notice, to provide reasonable accommodations so that people with disabilities may participate in Park events and programs.
Yes. Thanks to a grant from CVS and Boundless Playgrounds, Clippard Park has a beautiful 10,000 square foot, fully accessible playground for people of all abilities that features a poured rubber surface for easy maneuvering. The playground has:

The shelters at Colerain, Clippard, and Heritage Parks are all accessible with paved sidewalks leading from the parking lots to the shelter areas. Each shelter at these parks has at least one wheelchair accessible picnic table.

All shelters come with picnic tables and a charcoal grill. All of the shelters at Colerain Park, Clippard Park, and Heritage Park have electricity. Amenities near each shelter, such as corn hole, volleyball courts, etc, are open to the general public.
Trash is taken out each morning, but shelters do not get sanitized or deep cleaned on a regular basis.
No staples, duct tape, nails, or adhesives that will leave permanent residue or damage may be used to attach any items to the shelters or picnic tables. Tape may be used, however, all tape must be removed at the end of the applicant’s rental period.
No, you do not need a permit. Alcohol consumption is permitted in the shelter area only. Alcohol is not permitted in the park except in the reserved areas. No glass containers are allowed.
No. We do not allow bounce houses or other inflatables at any of our parks for events not sponsored by Colerain Township.
Pop-up tents are prohibited in our parks. We do not allow the public to bring in grills or their own tables to create their own space to host a picnic. Most parks do have tables spaced throughout the park that are available to be used on a first come, first served basis.
Disc jockeys are not permitted. Noise generated from the shelter area is not to be plainly audible 80 feet from the shelter, per Colerain Township Board of Trustees Resolution 9-03.
Some people are simply not aware that the shelters can be rented. If you show those in the shelter a copy of your reservation, most people will clean up and leave. If they refuse, we do not have employees that are in the parks nor do we have weekend office hours. We ask that the renter call the non-emergency Colerain Township Police number at 513-321-COPS (2677).

Objects with wheels are permitted on paths so long as they do not interfere with pedestrian traffic. This includes:
A citizen complaint is an allegation from any source, of any action or inaction by Department personnel the individual considers being contrary to law, proper procedure, good order or in some manner prejudicial to the individual, the Police Department, or to the community.
If the only complaint is a contention of innocence of a charge without any allegation of misconduct by the officer, you should seek judicial redress through established court procedure.
Complaints about the quality of service provided will be assigned to the employee’s immediate supervisor by the Chief of Police. Examples of these complaints are:

A complaint can be filed in:
All police personnel are authorized to take complaints, including third party complaints. A Colerain Township Police Department Citizen Complaint Form (DOC) will be completed each time a complaint is filed.
On the Colerain Township Police Department Citizen Complaint Form you will be requested to give your name, address, phone numbers where you can be reached and the name, address, and phone numbers of any witnesses. You will also need to provide the date, time, and facts of the incident. If you have the officer’s name, badge number, shift assignment, or car number it would be helpful, but is not necessary.
Each complaint will be resolved in writing. Your complaint will be assigned a number which will be provided to you. This number will be used to follow your complaint through the process. A quality of service complaint will be assigned to a supervisor and fully investigated. You may be asked to appear at our Police Department for an interview or it might be handled over the telephone.
Any serious allegation described above will be handled by the Chief of Police and/or either of the two section Commanders. This may include asking for assistance from another police agency or the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office. In either case the complaint will be fully investigated.
Once the complaint is filed you will be contacted and thoroughly informed of the process that will follow. You will also be kept informed as the process progresses.
Upon completion of the investigation a report will be forwarded to the Chief of Police for final disposition. Once the report is approved, you will be informed in writing of the outcome of the investigation of your complaint including whether any non-disciplinary corrective action or disciplinary action was taken.
The owner or person in control of a building or structure kept vacant on or after July 11, 2013 within Colerain Township, by the owner or person in control or ordered in whole or in part vacated or kept vacant by the Hamilton County General Health District or the Hamilton County Building Department shall apply for a Vacant Building Maintenance License and must register the vacant property. The property must be registered within ten days of becoming vacant.
If a property is vacant the owner or person in control must complete the registration form available for download and pay the registration fee based on the duration of time the building has been ordered vacated or kept vacant as determined by length of vacancy. A mortgagee who files a foreclosure on a vacant residential property on or after July 11, 2013 within Colerain Township must register the vacant, foreclosed residential property. A mortgagee must also register the property if it becomes vacant at any point during the foreclosure process. A property that is foreclosed and is not vacant need not be registered. The property must be registered within ten days of becoming vacant and foreclosed.
If a property is foreclosed and vacant the mortgagee must complete the Vacant Foreclosed Property Registration Form and pay the registration fee of $500.
